Welcome!

In my resource guide I have created a listing of Montreal based establishments that cater to Vegans or offer products and/or services that are suitable to Vegans. I only list establishments I have personally tried out. While I would like to visit them more often, I have time and budgetary restrictions. If you have a recommendation for a place that I do not have listed, please let me know and I will include your review and try to include a follow-up visit of my own.

Please keep in mind that I have done my best to research these businesses, but I cannot assure you that when you visit them that you will have a 100% Vegan experience. Suppliers, menus and policies may have changed since I visited them. If you are concerned, I advise you to ask the employees or manager yourself about ingredients that concern you.

If you have any suggestions of places I should include in my resource guide or books, products, or services I should try out, please drop me a line.

Vegan Spotlights

I stopped by Pure Biologique, a personal products shop, on Victoria avenue in Westmount. I went in looking for candles to bring with me on an upcoming trip and left with a lovely smelling green tea soy based candle, a travel candle, and a tea tree oil and oatmeal soap. I cannot wait to use them.

I stopped by Aux Vivres for supper. I ordered the soup of the day which was a lovely mushroom soup. Not the creamy kind but one that was puréed. I enjoyed it very much. I did not need to add salt or pepper. Then I followed it with a BLT in a chapati wrap. it was humongous and I was able to eat half of it. The second half was brought home for a late night snack. What makes this sandwich so tasty is the bacon alternative is made from smiked coconut. It is not at all like bacon, which if memory serves me correctly is thicker, saltier and fatty. This isntead is slightly sweet and flaky. So if you are the type who avoids fake meats this is not at all like that. For dessert I had a chocolate nut pie. The crust was a bit dense but the rest was gooey goodness.

I enjoyed some amazing take-out this week from Bonny's. FIrst up was a delicious shepard's pie. It tasted rich and hearty and was just what I needed after a long day. I also brought home some vegan cannelloni which was very satisfying (read the ingredient list carefully as they also carry a non-vegan one which has some cheese in it) and some Masoor Dal which also warmed me up.

I was also able to ahve a sit down meal. It was the first time I had the opportunity to check out the new location. I dropped by at the end of the lunch rush and found the place still buzzing with activitiy. I ordered cup of soup (which was a Moroccan bean soup) and a Tempeh sandwich. Both very tasty. For dessert I had a vegan brownie. It was absolutely huge. Very moist too. Definitely a treat I will try again next time - but with a scoop of vanilla soy ice cream on top!

Tonight I went to Chu Chai with a friend. We wanted to eat reasonably light (both in terms of price and portion size) so we each had a soup (spicy lemongrass with faux shrimp) and shared a cup of brown rice, the crispy seaweed apetizers (one of my favourite dishes) and the faux chicken in green curry. I had never had a green curry at Chu Chai before. I enjoyed the accompanying vegetables (zucchini, green bean and green peppers) as well as the mild kick. I still think though that red curries are my favourite.

Comedian DeAnne Smith performed an hour's set at Le Cagibi tonight. They host various events in their space. It is a bit awkward for shows as there is a post in the middle of the room, but with its casual seating it makes for a comfortable experience.

I was only a little hungry so I had their soup of the day with some bread. The soup was a delightfully tasty squash recipe with just a bit of kick to it and the bread, a thin slice of multigrain goodness. I also had a beer as it was a bit if an evening out.

I went to Le Faim du Monde for supper with a friend. There was only one waitress working so there was a bit of a delay before she came to take our order. Still, it was worth the wait as I am a fan of their fresh, wholesome meals. I ordered their Thali with lentils and she ordered the Asian Noodle Soup. Both meals were very filling. I took a vegan chocolate chip cookie home with me for dessert.

They now have a brunch plate available on weekend. They serve it until 2pm.. On another occasion I arrived at 1:20pm and they were sold out. From what I could tell the plate looked quite good and I hope to go some time soon to try it.

Last week I ate at Aux Vivres on two occasions. On the first I had the soup of the day (spinach & potato), a slice of pizza and chocolate pecan pie for dessert. The pizza was amazing. it hink it was crust - very light and fluffy. On the second visit my husband had the pizza with a side salad and he made the same comment about the delicious crust. I had gazpacho soup and a vege lox sandwich. I have never had real lox, but I have a feeling what they concocted is more a of a visual representation of lox (orange from the carrots). Regardless, it was quite yummy. The touf cream spread and the capers gave it a little punch. For dessert I had a very large slice of chocolate cake and my husbnad the chocolate pecan pie. Both amazing. As a vegan I so miss eating desserts at restaurants so Les Vivres is a great spot to go since they have e a selection to choose from.
