Spotlight Meals - Bonny's April 17th, 2008 I enjoyed some amazing take-out this week from Bonny's. FIrst up was a delicious shepard's pie. It tasted rich and hearty and was just what I needed after a long day. I also brought home some vegan cannelloni which was very satisfying (read the ingredient list carefully as they also carry a non-vegan one which has some cheese in it) and some Masoor Dal which also warmed me up. I was also able to ahve a sit down meal. It was the first time I had the opportunity to check out the new location. I dropped by at the end of the lunch rush and found the place still buzzing with activitiy. I ordered cup of soup (which was a Moroccan bean soup) and a Tempeh sandwich. Both very tasty. For dessert I had a vegan brownie. It was absolutely huge. Very moist too. Definitely a treat I will try again next time - but with a scoop of vanilla soy ice cream on top! - Brooksie March 24th, 2006 Today the weather was a little warmer than it had been these past few days so my husband M and I went for a walk. We stopped for lunch at Bonny's. I have walked past this restaurant a few times, but I never had the opportunity to go in. This afternoon I made it our destination. It is a small restaurant with only a handful of tables. It has an open air kitchen so you can see the proprietor Bonny and her staff working as you mull over the menu. Since it was a Saturday there were no lunch specials though they had their basic menu and two soups. One was a tomato-rice-endive soup. The other was a cream of chickpea. M and I chose the cream of chickpea soup. I ordered a cup of it with a chef's salad and M went with a bowl with a Boca Burger à la carte. At our table we had water with lemon and M also ordered a natural soda (though I forget which brand - I will note it down next time). The soup came rather quickly. It was less creamy and thick than I had expected it to be, but it was very tasty. I am not very good at identifying flavours, something I hope to get better at as I write these reviews. Still, I did find it peppery and flavourful. The bit of coriander was really lovely too.
Our main course took a little while longer to arrive, though it was no surprise. The chef's salad was thoughtfully put together and the opened faced Boca Burger was striking as well. M was not sure at first what to do because he had expected a double bun burger, but that did not stop him from digging in using his fork and knife. The burger was a black bean based burger on a homemade-looking whole wheat bun topped with a red tomato salsa and some avocado. My salad was quite large. The dressing was a simple one made of olive oil and apple cider with a bit of soy sauce, maple syrup and garlic (I asked). The salad was composed of a mix of field greens, endives, shredded carrot, avocado, cucumbers, chopped almonds, and sunflower seeds. The nuts and seeds were a special addition. Bonny had come up to me after I ordered to find out if I wanted any in particular.
I was still working on my salad when M went to the counter to order dessert. He had 3 power balls as they are called. They are made of dates, flax seeds, cocoa powder, shredded coconut, and other good things. It turns out they have a bit of honey in them (the person at the counter did not mention that when M asked if they were vegan), so we will know next time to order something else. I left with my dessert, which I saved for a late afternoon snack. It was a brown rice square - a really good option for people with gluten sensitivities. - Brooksie |
