Spotlight Meals - Aux Vivres

September 11th, 2008

I dropped by Aux Vivres for a quick lunch. I ordered their new chili with fries dish along with a small salad. it was a great lunch! The fries were oven crisp roasted potatoes wedges and the chili a rich mix of beans, tomatoes and spices. The salad was a nice balance to the heaviness of my main dish.

I stopped by Aux Vivres for supper. I ordered the soup of the day which was a lovely mushroom soup. Not the creamy kind but one that was puréed. I enjoyed it very much. I did not need to add salt or pepper. Then I followed it with a BLT in a chapati wrap. it was humongous and I was able to eat half of it. The second half was brought home for a late night snack. What makes this sandwich so tasty is the bacon alternative is made from smiked coconut. It is not at all like bacon, which if memory serves me correctly is thicker, saltier and fatty. This isntead is slightly sweet and flaky. So if you are the type who avoids fake meats this is not at all like that. For dessert I had a chocolate nut pie. The crust was a bit dense but the rest was gooey goodness.

Last week I ate at Aux Vivres on two occasions. On the first I had the soup of the day (spinach & potato), a slice of pizza and chocolate pecan pie for dessert. The pizza was amazing. it hink it was crust - very light and fluffy. On the second visit my husband had the pizza with a side salad and he made the same comment about the delicious crust. I had gazpacho soup and a vege lox sandwich. I have never had real lox, but I have a feeling what they concocted is more a of a visual representation of lox (orange from the carrots). Regardless, it was quite yummy. The touf cream spread and the capers gave it a little punch. For dessert I had a very large slice of chocolate cake and my husbnad the chocolate pecan pie. Both amazing. As a vegan I so miss eating desserts at restaurants so Les Vivres is a great spot to go since they have e a selection to choose from.

I had brunch for my birthday at Aux Vivres. My husband and I arrived early to make sure we got a table as they do not take reservations. My aunt and mother joined us a little later. They are not vegans in the least, but they do enjoy their vegetables. I knew they would be able to find something for themselves on the Les Vivres menu.

Here is what we had…

Me – the traditional brunch with maple/smoked flavoured tempeh, tofu scramble, corn bread, sweet potatoes, and a small salad. I had a freshly squeezed juice with apple, ginger and lemon (I think)

M (my husband) – a curried rice bowl and a smoothie

My mother and my aunt shared the Dragon Rice Bowl and a BLT sandwich on chapatti bread (the bacon substitute is made with crispy coconut – very neat).
