Welcome!

In my resource guide I have created a listing of Montreal based establishments that cater to Vegans or offer products and/or services that are suitable to Vegans.

I only list establishments I have personally tried out. While I would like to visit more establishments more often, I have time and budgetary restrictions. If you have a recommendation for a place that I do not have listed, please let me know and I will include your review and try to include a follow-up visit of my own.

Please keep in mind that I have done my best to research these businesses, but I cannot assure you that when you visit them that you will have a 100% Vegan experience. Suppliers, menus and policies may have changed since I visited them. If you are concerned, I advise you to ask the employees or manager yourself about ingredients that concern you.

If you have any suggestions of places I should include in my resource guide or books, products, or services I should try out, please drop me a line.

I recently purchased the coupon book from Conscience Verte and it certainly has paid for itself. I have eaten at Le Cagibi, Bonnys and Burritoville and I have shopped at Arterie. The coupon book was $20 and I must have saved over $75 so far. With many more restaurants, services and shops to consider by the end of 2009 I will have saved more and enjoyed more of what Montreal eco-conscience establishments have to offer.

I purchased some boots at Arterie this week: the Alta and the Sadie by Novoca. Just in time for snow - though the Sadie are more for show and the Alta I will have to wear thick socks with on cold days. Many shoes and boots are still on sale though sizes are limited. It is perfect though for those size 9 & 10 people out there. If you do head out there let them know you found them from Vegan Montreal.

Arterie - Boutique & Friperie
176 Bernard Ouest, Montreal
514-273-3933

Aux Vivres now has a terrific Smoked Wheat sandwich that I suppose pays tribute to a Montreal classic but without, well, the animal suffering.

Aux Vivres
4631 Boul. St Laurent, Montreal
514-842-3479

Lola Rosa in NDG is now open with regular business hours (11am-2:30pm). I am a big fan of their curry.

I finally made my way to Arterie, a boutique that carries many wonderful lines of vegan shoes. I have been wanting to buy a new pair of heels and did not want to purchase online. my feet are notoriously prone to blisters so trying them on before purchasing them is essential (not 100% blister proof but a good start).

So I headed over to this great shop filled with all sort of lovely clothing and shoes (and other little knickknacks) and went straight to the shoes section. A quick try on and I left the store with Bella shoes by Novoca and a pair of Rosy shoes from Vegetarian Shoes. And the really treat? They were half off!

There are still some shoes still on sale so now is the time to make a visit.

I dropped by Aux Vivres for a quick lunch. I ordered their new chili with fries dish along with a small salad. it was a great lunch! The fries were oven crisp roasted potatoes wedges and the chili a rich mix of beans, tomatoes and spices. The salad was a nice balance to the heaviness of my main dish.

Lola Rosa has opened a small restaurant and take-out counter in the west end of the city. Its main location is in the McGill ghetto (I picked up an awesome vegan cinnamon bun recently). The new location located on Sherbrooke street near Vendome Metro has much the same menu. While the menu is mainly lacto-ovo vegetarian there are some vegan items. My favourite is the curry. I actually have near weekly cravings for it sicne I first had it.

I stopped by Pure Biologique, a personal products shop, on Victoria avenue in Westmount. I went in looking for candles to bring with me on an upcoming trip and left with a lovely smelling green tea soy based candle, a travel candle, and a tea tree oil and oatmeal soap. I cannot wait to use them.

About Brooksie

I am a native Montrealer who has been a vegetarian since 1993 and a vegan since 1996. I made this lifestyle choice because it made sense to me from an animal rights point of view as well as an environmental and health perspective.
